A garden cinema is one of the more challenging garden-room briefs because it demands very specific conditions: near-total blackout, controlled acoustics, and enough width for a proper seating arrangement. Get all three right and you have a room that genuinely rivals a small commercial cinema.
The three critical variables
- Blackout — internal blinds or fabric-lined walls on all glazing; recessed rooflights blacked out with removable inserts
- Sound — dense wall build-ups (an extra plasterboard layer or specialist acoustic panelling), and a floor that absorbs rather than reflects
- Screen size vs viewing distance — as a rule of thumb, screen width = 1/3 of viewing distance for cinematic feel
Projector vs TV
For a truly cinematic experience, a 4K short-throw projector onto a 100-120 inch fixed screen beats even the largest domestic TV. For a mixed-use room (cinema by night, TV by day), a large OLED TV plus a good soundbar delivers 80% of the experience with less faff.
